Alkalinity refers to the amount of alkaline materials in water. It’s closely related to pH, which is a measurement of acidity, but both are not the same. High alkalinity can be caused by hard water and acid rain. Correct alkalinity in your pool is key to maintaining balanced water that’s safe for swimming.
Acid Is the Response
Use muriatic acid to lower the alkalinity in your swimming pool. The ideal alkalinity level is between 80 and 125 parts per thousand. When the alkalinity in your swimming pool is too large, it’s difficult to control the pH since it is going to resist changes under alkaline conditions. Reduce the alkalinity gradually instead of trying to do all of it at one time, particularly if you’re making a massive shift. Add up to 1 quart of muriatic acid for every 10,000 g, wait for 12 hoursand then add more after testing the water, if necessary. When the alkalinity is within the acceptable range, the pH level can be adjusted as needed.Take security precautions like wearing rubber gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing. Do not breathe in the fumes or allow the acid to come into direct contact with your skin.
