Adjustable Mattress Technology

Adjustable mattresses allow you to customize your bed with various forms of technology. In the past, these goods had a decidedly industrial appearance, limiting their use in the home. Modern versions, however, are almost indistinguishable from a conventional mattress and box spring when the bed is created, with unseen technology which permits you to adjust firmness, height, configuration and even have an in-bed massage. The typical adjustable mattress focuses on only one form of technologies, though top-of-the-line versions combine all three, letting you modify the feel of the mattress as well as the height and enjoy a massage — all with a handheld remote.

Personalized Firmness

Air chamber mattresses which become heavier or thicker with the push of a button allow you to tailor your bed to your personal comfort level. The technology is relatively simple — the mattress comprises numerous air chambers that inflate and deflate to adjust the firmness. For extra relaxation, they are encased in padding, upholstery or memory foam. Many have cooling technology in the form of small gel-like beads used to reduce body temperature during sleep, remedying a frequent problem with memory foam. Cheaper versions allow you to adjust the firmness of the entire bed, while cheaper options allow you to adjust both sides separately, a benefit accomplished by separating the air chambers into two places. Not all air chamber mattresses need a motorized base, however.

Motorized Base to Height

When a bed can increase, bend and lower, the primary technology is situated in the foundation rather than the bed itself. Powered by a motor, the foundation is broken down into three or more sections, with machinery which makes the foot and head move up and down, either separately or in exactly the same time. A specialized mattress flexible enough to adapt with the foundation sits on top. In some instances, the mattress itself can also be adjustable, using air chamber technology.

In-Bed Massages

Some adjustable mattresses feature a motorized massage option, created with technologies similar to what’s used in massage chairs and seat covers. The mattress comprises one or more units installed between the foundation of the bed and the Landscaping design Boise, and placed to reach the average adult’s back, shoulders or legs. Some mattresses include one massager, but some have two or even more. The latter lets you turn on all of these, producing a custom full-body massage or a gentle vibration to relax sore shoulders. The motors shift between low and high, either on command or in a preset pattern, and may have different movements and intensity levels.

Remote Control Options

Adjustable mattress technology is typically controlled with a remote, although older and cheaper versions may feature switches along the bottom, side or rear of the bed. Some remotes allow you to preset your preferred firmness, mattress massage and configuration sequences. Dual-sided beds that allow you to place one side to another height or firmness compared to the other typically come with two remotes. Newer versions utilize wireless technology and batteries to eliminate cords, while some are wired into the bed.
